Zidane lashes out at journalist over leaving Real Madrid

The Frenchman was in no mood to answer questions about his decision to leave Real when he was cornered by reporters in Vallecas.

Zinedine Zidane hit back at a Spanish journalist for asking questions about the nature of his departure from Real Madrid, saying: “your job is a shame”. Zinedine Zidane has made the decision to quit his job as Santiago Bernabeu coach after the 2020-21 season without winning any trophies at Real Madrid. The Frenchman, who guided the club to three successive Champions League crowns during his first term between 2016 and 2018, has since written an open letter explaining why he chose to end his contract.

What is Raphaël Varane playing with Real Madrid?

Zinedine Zidane has slammed club president Florentino Perez for failing to support him during Real Madrid’s less successful spell, while expressing his belief that his previous work for the club had been overlooked. “I’m leaving because I feel that the club no longer has the self-confidence I need, nor the support to build something in the medium or long term” , we read in the message of the former 48-year-old player to the supporters.

“I understand football and I know the demands of a club like Real Madrid. I know that when you don’t win you have to go. But with that a very important thing has been forgotten, all I have built on a daily basis forgot what I brought to my relationships with the players, with the 150 people who work with and around the team. I want there to be respect for what we have achieved together. I wish my relationship with the club and the president over the past few months was a bit different from that of other coaches “Zidane said.

Zinedine Zidane was asked about the letter while at Vallecas watching his son Luca play for Rayo Vallecano in Spain’s second division play-offs this weekend. A journalist from Directo Gol asked him: ” Sir, how are you? How is it going ? You left Real Madrid badly with the letter. ” Zidane then responded angrily by saying: “Are you going to follow me with the same questions? Really, your job is shameful. You know me and I know you.”

Real Madrid, Benzema judges Zidane’s departure

“You stop recording and come here to talk to me” , concluded Zinedine Zidane. The former Real Madrid coach was then seen grabbing the journalist in question in order to speak to him as they walked away from the cameras. Zinedine Zidane returned to the bench at the Santiago Bernabeu in March 2019 following the Merengues’ rapid decline after his departure, and quickly managed to stabilize the ship.

The Frenchman won the club’s first La Liga title since 2017 in his first full season on the sidelines, with the Spanish Super Cup. However, the 2020-21 season was far less successful for Real Madrid, who finished second behind rivals Atletico Madrid in La Liga and were knocked out of the Champions League in the semi-finals after being outclassed by the future Chelsea winners.
