Barring an unexpected change in circumstances, Marcelo will remain at Real Madrid for the 2021/22 season, according to Marca.
This is the last year of the Brazilian side’s contract. Indeed, his lease will end in June 2022. The left-back has been mentioned as one of the players who could be sold this summer, but Marcelo has reached out to officials to discuss his situation.
The Brazilian has a great relationship with officials at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu and they have assured him there is nothing to fear. Carlo Ancelotti’s opinion was also a factor in the decision to keep Marcelo, the Italian having used the defender 53 times in the 2014/15 season. This is the most matches Marcelo has managed in a year as a Real Madrid player.
Now he is not the incumbent left-back position as that role belongs to Ferland Mendy. Moreover, Miguel Gutierrez received minutes in this position towards the end of last season and remains a promising prospect.
Not to miss
However, Real Madrid still hold Marcelo in high regard. He is vice-captain and could even become the main captain if Sergio Ramos leaves. Therefore, the club will respect the wishes of the player, who wishes to complete his contract.
The Brazilian arrived from Fluminense in 2006 as Roberto Carlos’ successor and 15 years later has played more matches than the Galactic legend.
Marcelo has won so much with Los Blancos and, with 22 titles so far, he’s only one trophy away from matching Paco Gento’s booty, just like Ramos. With another season ahead of him, Marcelo could match or even overtake Gento to become the club’s most decorated player.
