The legendary former Barça captain, still close to Messi, has given a clue to his state of mind.
Carles Puyol believes Lionel Messi is motivated and enthusiastic at Barcelona, although he has not commented on his former teammate’s future.
Messi’s contract expires this summer and there has been a lot of speculation around him this season.
“I spoke to him recently, when he matched Xavi [le record d’apparition de Hernandez]”Puyol told RAC 1.” He’s good good and he’s enthusiastic, I think he’s in the best place. “
“But each individual decides what he wants and we must understand and respect the decision he will make.”
Ronald Koeman has brought Barcelona back in the title race this season and Puyol is impressed with the former Dutch international’s work at the club.
“From the outside it looks like the players are happy with Koeman,” he said.
“He’s a club legend. “He does a good job and he deserves respect and trust. Then, at the end of the season, a balance will be made.”
Puyol appreciated the recent form on the field of the team, enough to forget a disappointing start to the season. “There has been a change of energy in the team,” he said.
“I see the positive, there is enthusiasm. We saw that in the return from the Copa del Rey. One more goal in the Champions League against Paris [Saint-Germain] could have changed everything too. It’s a new project, with a coach and with young players. La Liga [Santander] is still possible and there is also the Copa del Rey final. “
