FC Barcelona will not benefit from any exemption from the Spanish League with regard to Lionel Messi’s salary.
Lionel Messi has been a free player since July 1 and a contract extension with Barça now appears hypothetical. It is all the more so as the Catalan club will not be allowed to circumvent the rules to keep its star.
Messi will have to cut his salary
According to information communicated by the daily Sport, Barcelona have a salary cap to respect to enter the nails of financial fair play. The Blaugrana had already largely passed him last year and this is what notably prevented them from signing Memphis Depay. Lately, they hoped to benefit from an exception to be able to retain the Pulga. In vain. La Liga president Javier Tebas has rejected Barcelona’s request for additional leeway.
Messi will therefore not sign a new contract with his club unless he accepts a substantial drop in his emoluments on the Camp Nou side. He is not sure whether he is inclined to make such a sacrifice.
