LOSC Lille v Wolfsburg match summary, 14/09/2021, Champions League

Lille-Wolfsburg (0-0): The Mastiffs stumble on the Wolves

Dominant and in power play, LOSC failed to score against Wolfsburg.

Barely in Ligue 1, LOSC has found color in the Champions League without winning.

But it was an attractive LOSC who played his first game in this 2021-2022 Champions League campaign.

No shooting for Wolfsburg in the first period

Determined, Lille dominated Wolfsburg head and shoulders. At the break, the Germans had not shot once on goal!

During this first act, Burak Yilmaz obtained two chances, first missing his control (21st) then the frame (35th). Angel Gomes was also a thrill in the German defense by sending a powerful long strike but, unfortunately, not on target (39th).

A goal denied for a few millimeters

LOSC only needed one goal to be rewarded for its efforts. And upon returning from the locker room, the Pierre-Mauroy stadium was exulting: on a superb opening by Angel Gomes, Jonathan Ikoné put his head back for Jonathan David who offered himself a duel with Casteels, the goalkeeper of Wolfsburg and deceived him by placing the ball between his legs (48th).

Unfortunately for the LOSC, the goal was refused by the VAR because the ball had gone out of a few millimeters in touch on the recovery of Gomes …

Wolfsburg ends at 10

Despite this disallowed goal, LOSC continued to dominate and pushed Wolfsburg into the wrong. Wanting to prevent a Lille from starting a counter-attack, Brooks made a voluntary hand and received a second yellow card, synonymous with red (62nd).

At eleven against ten, the LOSC rushed even more to the attack but David (64th) then Burak (69th) on Casteels.

Ten minutes from the end, Burak Yilmaz was in charge of a free kick ideally placed at the entrance to the area but the German wall repelled the Turkish shot. In stoppage time, following a corner, José Fonte missed the frame on a powerful header (90 + 3rd).

At the end of additional time, Lille thought they would get a penalty for a Guilavogui foul on Onana (90 + 6th). But after the intervention of the VAR, the fault was located just outside the area … The free kick did not work and the referee ended the game.

Group G: everyone tied

If the LOSC can feed regrets with this draw, in the content, the men of Gourvennec are reassured.

At the end of this first day, the four teams of group G are on equal points since in the other meeting, Sevilla FC and RB Salzburg parted in a 1-1 draw.
