After a delicate start to the season, AS Monaco goalkeeper Alex Nübel was not spared by the critics. The level of play of the ASM goalkeeper weakens his starting status, but Niko Kovac wanted to consolidate it this Wednesday, on the eve of the first match of the Asemists in the Europa League against Sturm Graz (scheduled for Thursday at 9 p.m.).

Kovac flies to the rescue of Nübel

Radek ” (Majecki) did a really good job last season, but Alex (Nübel) needs matches, rhythm, explained the Croatian technician in remarks taken up by L’Équipe. He needs to chain matches. He will be our guardian tomorrow. Radek will play the Coupe de France matches. The Europa League is a very important competition for us. We don’t say to ourselves: “we don’t care”. We want to go as far as possible. We’re not going to change the keeper.

“I think he’s good,” Kovac continued of Nübel. He conceded several goals that he couldn’t do anything about. Of the seven that we conceded in Ligue 1, four or five were goals taken on one against one. It’s difficult to be decisive in these kinds of situations. Against Marseille, he had three or four one against one to manage… For the moment, he hasn’t had many opportunities to show his qualities because we haven’t conceded a lot of chances. He needs clean sheets. He needs more support from the players in front of him, not just from the defenders but from the whole team, to better protect our goal. He needs a little more support. But I’m happy with Alex, he’s a smart guy, he’s going to show his qualities because he’s a very good goalkeeper.
