Jürgen Klopp confessed his astonishment at the non-selection of his right-back to the England national team during the last international meetings at the end of March.
In a press conference, the German commented on the choices made by Gareth Southgate, the England manager: “If Alexander-Arnold is not in the squad, then England must have an extremely good team. I was surprised he didn’t get the call. (…) I respect Gareth (Southgate) who makes his own decisions but I didn’t understand him because Alexander-Arnold was, for the last two seasons, the best right-back in world football – that’s the truth and at an incredible young age (22). “
Jürgen Klopp conceded that the full-back struggled to start his season: “It took him a while to kick off his season, but from the moment he did, he has been one of our most consistent players. (…) As he was not with the national team, so he had time to train. He trained to an extremely high standard. (…) He’s very ambitious, I’m sure he wants to be in the England team and he will try everything to be there again. “
Gareth Southgate has favored on the right Kieran Trippier (Atlético Madrid), Reece James (Chelsea) and Kyle Walker (Manchester City). This season, Trent Alexander-Arnold has played 34 games for Liverpool, with 1 goal and 5 assists.
