A former Chelsea player is critical of the Blues’ level and would like to see Karim Benzema in London.
Former Chelsea goalkeeper Rob Green believes Chelea is struggling to capitalize on opportunities.
The London club’s current goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, was forced to make several important saves against Zinedine Zidane’s men in the Champions League semi-finals.
In the end, the Blues won a deserved 2-0 victory to reach the C1 final against Manchester City on Saturday. While Mendy is uncertain, with a minor injury heading into the final. Green believes Tuchel will want him to return to display a solid defensive tactical approach in Porto.
“If it’s a game with a lot of goals, I like Man City, but with fewer goals, then Chelsea,” Green told Goal. “Chelsea are creating chances and I was at Villa Park where they lost 2-1, but they don’t change their chances. It’s the same week after week.
“Crystal Palace is the only time since Tuchel arrived where they have been effective enough. It has been around two goals at most or 1-0 wins. They have played against Real Madrid and if Benzema is playing for Chelsea, they would have won by eight goals “.
“It’s not just one individual. This weekend Mason Mount missed some great chances. If they score their goals Chelsea can win, but in a six-goal game it would be City.”
Green trained alongside Kepa in the 2018-19 season at Chelsea and forged a strong bond with the world’s most expensive goalkeeper. Still, he understands the value Mendy has brought after going eight games without conceding goals in 11 Champions League outings this season.
“Mendy was great and he and Thiago Silva contributed a lot, which helps give the team an element of control in the game,” he added. “Mendy has a dominant stature and he’s positive in goal, he comes for all the balls and can dictate the game.
