Luis Enrique named his group of 23 players from La Roja for the Nations League Final Four and responded to Barcelona rumors.
Spain will face Italy on October 6 in the semi-finals, a repeat of the Euro 2020 semi-final that Italy won on penalties. Roberto Mancini’s men went on to defeat England in the final at Wembley Stadium to win the competition.
Luis Enrique has selected the following for the international break: Unai Simon, David de Gea, Robert Sanchez; Pedro Porro, Cesar Azpilicueta, Aymeric Laporte, Eric Garcia, Inigo Martinez, Pau Torres, Sergio Reguilon, Marcos Alonso; Rodri, Sergio Busquets, Pedri, Gavi, Koke, Mikel Merino, Marcos Llorente; Yeremi Pino, Ferran Torres, Mikel Oyarzabal, Pablo Fornals and Pablo Sarabia.
The most important inclusion is that of Gavi. The 17-year-old Andalusian playmaker only played 288 minutes in the first team for FC Barcelona, but he showed Luis Enrique enough to earn a place in his list of 23.
Not to miss
The Asturian has also decided not to include a conventional center-forward in his squad.
Luis Enrique, who spoke at the press conference in which he announced the list of 23, did not hesitate to deny rumors that he could return to Barcelona, where Ronald Koeman is under pressure after two consecutive defeats in the Champions League against Bayern Munich and Benfica (3-0).
Luis Enrique led Barcelona to victory in the 2015 edition, the Catalans’ last triumph in Europe.
“I think Joan Laporta doesn’t even have my phone number,” he said. “I am not going to leave the Spanish national team. I have a contract here and I will respect it.”
