Third in Ligue 1 last season, Monaco will face Sparta Prague in the 3rd preliminary round of the Champions League.
The Ligue 1 season does not resume until August 8, but it will have already started for some French clubs. If Lille and PSG will cross swords on the occasion of the Champions Trophy in Tel Aviv this weekend, AS Monaco will put on the heat from next week.
Third in the championship last season, the Principality’s club had long hoped that Manchester United would do the job and win the Europa League to the detriment of Villarreal. A final victory for the Mancuniens would have allowed the band to Niko Kovac to be directly qualified for the group stage of the Champions League.
Unfortunately, it was Unai Emery’s Yellow Sub who won and therefore forced Monaco to play a third preliminary round and then a jump-off to be certain of playing the C1 next season.
Since Wednesday evening, Wissam Ben Yedder’s teammates have known their opponent for the 3rd preliminary round. Defeated in the first leg 2-1, Sparta Prague turned the situation around in the return leg against Rapid Vienna (2-0) and therefore qualified.
The first leg between the Czech team and Monaco will take place on August 3, before a return to Louis II, on August 10 and a place for the play-offs with potential opponents, Benfica, Shakhtar Donetsk or even PSV.
