2018 Euroleague winners Real Madrid were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the competition after losing in the decisive fifth game on Tuesday against Efes Istanbul, while Barcelona and Milan advanced to Final 4.
These three teams join CSKA Moscow, already qualified for Final 4 which will take place from May 28 to 31 in Cologne (Germany). The Madrilenians, sixth in the regular season, were beaten after a thrilling match 5 against the Istanbul Efes (88-83). The two teams were still tied at the start of the last minute of the match, but Krunoslav Simon and Chris Singleton made the difference on the Turkish side. Finalist in 2019 and leading the regular season at the end of the competition in 2020, Efes is still aiming for a first success in the main continental event. But for that, they will have to defeat in the semifinals their executioner in 2019, CSKA Moscow. The Russians are the only ones who only needed three matches to qualify, against the Turks of Fenerbahçe.
The other poster will pit Milan against Barcelona. The Milanese deprived Bayern Munich of their first Final 4, which is more in their country, by winning 92 to 89, despite a good return from the Germans at the end of the match. First in the regular season, the Barcelona also won their chopper match against Zenit Saint Petersburg, without suffering (79-53) with 7 points from their last recruit Pau Gasol. They qualify for the final phase of the European season for the first time since 2014, and hope for a first title since 2010.
