Barça and his dilemma at the left-back position

Koeman’s Barca have plenty of options to explore at left-back this summer.

Barcelona have been linked with the arrival of a left-back this summer, especially with Junior Firpo closing in on Leeds United, but now it looks like the Catalan club might trust Alejandro Balde and Sergino Dest instead.

One of the reasons for this is due to Barcelona’s financial difficulties as there is very little money to play with and the club instead favor recruiting a central midfielder after missing the signing of Georginio Wijnaldum, who instead joined the free Paris Saint-Germain.

Moreover, Ronald Koeman is not afraid to appear a little weak at the left-back position as he has a lot of faith in Barcelona’s first choice option in this position: Jordi Alba.

Barcelona leaders and Koeman also have enormous confidence in Alejandro Balde, who they believe can become an excellent left-back. The 17-year-old represents Spain at youth level and will spend this summer with Barcelona’s first team for the preseason.

If Balde lives up to expectations, the Catalan club will be hopeful that he can alternate between the B team and the first team, with the youngster ready to have opportunities when Jordi Alba rests.

Another option in this role is Sergino Dest, who played left-back a few times during the 2020/21 season. Despite being primarily a right-back, Koeman is confident that the American will be able to replace on the other side if necessary.

If Barcelona don’t bring in anyone to replace Junior and end up using Dest as a makeshift left-back, there could be repercussions on the right side of the defense. The club have already signed Emerson Royal from Real Betis for nine million euros, and the other player who can play at right-back is Sergi Roberto.
