The president of PSG has once again affirmed his opposition to the Super League, wanted by several major European clubs.
PSG were not one of the “founding clubs”, wishing the creation of a European Super League, and having even taken the plunge last month, before going back in front of the outcry caused.
Six English clubs, three Italians, three Spaniards, but not Paris, then. And for good reason, the president of the club of the capital (placed at the head of the ECA in place of Agnelli, president of Juventus during the crisis) has always been fiercely opposed to this project.
“Football has been around for years and years. The Super League was not concerned with defending the interests of football, he once again dropped in remarks relayed by AFP. You can envision changes but not break the tradition that each club can hope to achieve its dreams. “
The principle of an (almost) closed League remains one of the main criticisms of the desire of the creators of the project to see fifteen of them participate in the competition each year, regardless of their national results. A system that would deprive the nice surprises of the European championships of a well-deserved participation the following season.
“All teams must have the opportunity to take part in the biggest competitions one day, and while remaining under the wing of UEFA”, continues Al-Khelaifi.
“The Champions League is a very strong brand that must be preserved, but we always have to be able to adapt to the market, and this is true for all competitions, domestic or international.”
The Super League project as envisioned by the twelve clubs was abandoned, but at the same time UEFA adopted a reform aimed at increasingly favoring the big clubs and the most powerful leagues. From 2024, 36 teams will compete for the most prestigious trophy in European football, and a ten-day “mini championship” will replace the group stage, considered too boring.
At the same time, the European body has also opened proceedings against the last three clubs not to have reversed the idea of creating a Super League: Real Madrid, Barça and Juventus.
